Professor Arthur Phillipss Introductory Essay and Marriage Laws in Africa, reprinted here from the original survey, present the results of an inquiry into the effects of modern conditions and institutions on African Customary law relating to Marriage and family life. These remain an indispensable foundation for a study of the contemporary situation.

Dr. Henry Morris has contributed a review of developments down to 1970, with a bibliography of additional sources, which will add much to the usefulness of the new volume.
